WHAT ARE THE AIMS OF THE  FRIENDS?

The Friends of Peebles Old will exist to support the Church in the maintenance and upkeep of the fabric of this historic church building. Like many churches Peebles Old  has a continual need for regular repairs and restoration work. The Friends will help contribute towards the costs of preservation of the fabric of the church, towards repairs, replacement of major items, and help with the maintenance costs of fixtures of special importance.
To many people the Old Parish Church building at the end of the High Street IS Peebles. Its use goes beyond a place of worship. Its image is used commercially. Photographs, paintings and sketches of the church appear on postcards and calendars and are used  on T-Shirts and posters. It is used to encourage tourism in the region. The church is used as a concert venue. It is a favourite place for weddings.  Without the Old Parish Church, Peebles would not be Peebles. Regrettably the upkeep and repair of the building is becoming more and more onerous for just the worshippers in the church to support. Thus, a separate voluntary and charitable organisation called the Friends of Peebles Old is going to be set up to widen the source of support beyond that of the congregation.

WHO CAN BECOME A FRIEND ?

Well, the Friends seek to encourage anyone who is interested in the building from either a civic, historic or architectural point of view, or who benefits from it, to join those who are concerned in preserving an important place of worship and centre of community life. Funds would raised by annual subscription / donation / or any other means and members would invited to take part in fund- raising events of a social nature.

WHAT THE FRIENDS FUNDS WILL BE FOR?

Friends’ funds will not be used for general housekeeping costs, such as heating, lighting, costs of services etc. These will continue to be borne by the church congregation. Friends will help to ensure that: the fabric of the church is preserved for future generations. the church is available to everyone for worship and family occasions such as baptisms, weddings and funerals.  the church continues to be an important part of the Peebles community and enjoyed  by the many visitors.
